Chapter 25: Haircuts and Second Chances

The Dream House

Book One

Saturday mornings at Imani Barbershop were apparently a different universe.

I should've known the moment I opened the door.

The place was packed.

The familiar buzz of clippers mixed with laughter, music playing softly through the speakers, children running between chairs, and the smell of aftershave somehow blended into something... comforting.

It wasn't noisy.

It was alive.

"Girl!"

Ruth looked up from the braiding chair and immediately walked over.

She wrapped me in a hug before I even had time to react.

"You came back!"

"I said I would."

"I know."

She smiled.

"But people say that all the time."

Before I could answer, a little boy sprinted past us wearing a barber cape twice his size.

"I don't want my ears cut off!"

The entire shop burst into laughter.

"I've never cut anybody's ears."

Sinnad didn't even look up from the haircut he was finishing.

The little boy folded his arms.

"You almost did."

"I absolutely did not."

"You got close."

"I sneezed."

"You sneezed with scissors!"

"You moved."

"You scared me!"

"I was scared too."

The customer sitting in the next chair laughed so hard tears rolled down his face.

Even the little boy couldn't hold his serious face anymore.

He smiled.

Then laughed.

Then climbed into Sinnad's chair without another complaint.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

He didn't convince the child with words.

He made him feel safe.

I found myself smiling.

"Don't."

Selena's voice interrupted my thoughts.

I looked at her.

"What?"

"I know that smile."

"What smile?"

"The one where you're studying people."

"I wasn't."

"You absolutely were."

Luna quietly whispered,

"You were."

Traitors.

Both of them.

Ruth laughed while organizing her combs.

"I like you girls."

"We're adorable."

Luna answered proudly.

Selena looked at her.

"We're exhausting."

"That too."

Before anyone could continue, the front door opened again.

A woman stormed inside.

She couldn't have been much older than us.

Beautiful.

Confident.

Expensive handbag.

Perfect makeup.

Expensive perfume.

She walked straight toward Sinnad.

Didn't greet anyone.

Didn't even look around.

She simply stood beside his chair with her arms folded.

"We need to talk."

The entire shop became strangely quiet.

Sinnad didn't stop cutting hair.

"I'm working."

"It'll only take a minute."

"I'm still working."

She sighed dramatically.

"Seriously?"

"Seriously."

She looked around.

Clearly expecting someone to support her.

Nobody did.

Not Ruth.

Not the customers.

Not the elderly man reading a newspaper.

Nobody.

Finally...

The little boy in the chair spoke.

"He's busy."

The woman blinked.

"I'm talking to him."

"So am I."

The shop exploded with laughter.

Even the woman couldn't hide a smile.

Barely.

"You've got jokes."

The little boy proudly nodded.

"I know."

Sinnad finally finished the haircut.

He dusted the loose hair from the child's shoulders.

Turned the chair toward the mirror.

"What do you think?"

The little boy stared at himself.

Touched his fade.

His eyes lit up.

"I look cool."

"You always were."

The little boy reached into his tiny pocket.

Pulled out three crumpled dollar bills.

Sinnad gently closed his hand.

"Keep it."

"But Mommy said—"

"Tell Mommy..."

He smiled.

"...your first day of Grade One deserves a fresh haircut."

The little boy looked confused.

"But... who's paying?"

"I already did."

The child hugged him.

Without warning.

Without hesitation.

Then ran toward the door.

"Mom! I look handsome!"

I watched the little family leave.

Something tightened inside my chest.

Nobody clapped.

Nobody made a big deal out of it.

Apparently...

This wasn't unusual.

I quietly looked toward Ruth.

She simply smiled.

"He does that all the time."

Selena heard it too.

She didn't say anything.

Not one word.

But I noticed something.

She wasn't looking at Sinnad anymore.

She was watching the little boy leave.

Watching the mother wipe away tears before stepping outside.

Watching the joy one simple act had created.

Then...

Almost unconsciously...

Selena smiled.

A real smile.

The kind that reaches your eyes.

She caught herself.

Quickly looked away.

Straightened her blazer.

Pulled out her phone.

Pretended to answer an email.

But I'd already seen it.

Luna had too.

Our eyes met.

Neither of us said a word.

We didn't need to.

Because for the first time...

Selena hadn't admired Sinnad's confidence.

Or his calmness.

Or his eyes.

She'd admired...

His heart.

And somehow...

That scared her more than anything else.
